The old jail is a two-story building built in 1866-7で、手切りのしっかりしたライムストーンを使用しています。 Goodspeed’s 1887 History of Tennesseeでは、「シェルビィビルで最もハンサムで目立つ建物の1つ」と紹介されています。 グッドスピードによると、それはテネシー州で「最も安全な刑務所の一つ」であり、「最も小さい人間が逃げられないような細長い窓」で採光と換気が行われていた。
